Introducing Steffan Harries from our Product team! We asked Steff what it’s like to work at Bipsync, check out what he had to say…

As a Senior Software Engineer, Steff’s role involves a wide range of tasks from developing new features, managing customer data migrations, and mentoring newer team members to get up to speed with our processes & practices.

After he graduated from Aberystwyth University’s Computer Science department in 2012, Steff moved to Cardiff where he worked for a large software agency on a wide range of different client projects before joining Bipsync a little over 5 years ago looking for a different challenge and long term goals. His interests are in cycling, motorsports, photography, and cultivating a large dataset of A* GIFs!

Check out what Steff had to say about working at Bipsync…

What’s your favorite part about working at Bipsync?
The collaborative effort towards problem-solving and the team’s camaraderie! Everyone gets involved in contributing towards improving our product, our processes, and making Bipsync a better place to be.

What has been your most proud moment at Bipsync (so far)?
Helping upskill a more junior member of the team into a more technical-orientated role has been very rewarding. It feels like it wasn’t that long ago that I was in their position so being able to share tips, advice, and (hopefully!) help someone grow has been a fantastic feeling.

Describe what your typical day looks like at Bipsync…
I start with a big mug of tea and work through some quick-to-do tasks in the morning and catch up with those I work the closest with about what major tasks we plan to start/finish that day. I break for lunch and then in the afternoon get some background music or a podcast on and get stuck into the major thing I’m working on that day whether it’s a new feature, improvement, or tracking down a bug fix. Our development team has lots of people who are resident experts on certain technologies/techniques so there’s always someone to bounce an idea off on how best to tackle something.

What excites you the most about working in a start-up environment?
Being actively involved and informed about how what we’re building improves Bipsync’s future for us and our clients is something I’ve never had anywhere else. It means you feel a great sense of reward when you’re involved in setting & reaching goals because you know they’re not something arbitrary that came from a stuffy boardroom. I’m always excited at the end of a year when we discuss what we want to accomplish next!

What do you think are the most important qualities of a Software Engineer?
Communication, eagerness to learn, and knowledge sharing are what can transform a good developer into a great one.

What would you say is the most satisfying aspect of your role?
I find it very satisfying when you work on an improvement raised by a customer that makes their workflow easier. It’s great knowing that you’ve had an impact on improving someone’s day-to-day use of Bipsync.

How do you think your Bipsync colleagues would describe you in 3 words?
GIFs, GIFs, GIFs!

Any other takeaways about working at Bipsync that you’d like to share?
Working with people who are eager and enthusiastic about what we do as a team is infectious and helps ensure that not only do we succeed as a business but we look out for each other along the way too.
